Clustering instability in a freely falling granular jet.

چکیده
This paper investigates a clustering instability of a freely falling granular jet composed of 100 microm glass spheres. The granular flow out of a circular nozzle starts out spatially uniform and then, further downstream, breaks up into well-defined clusters. An optical method is used that measures inhomogeneities in the flow in order to quantify the growth of the clusters. The role of air is investigated in this phenomenon by changing the ambient air pressure down to 1/5000th atm. Clustering is observed down to the lowest pressure and the presence of air leads to larger clusters but does not initiate the cluster formation. The analysis shows that the cluster size is set by fluctuations on the order of the size of the particles at the nozzle.

Quantitative study of a freely cooling granular medium
We present a numerical study of a two dimensional granular medium consisting of hard inelastic disks. The evolution of the medium throughout a cooling process is monitored. Two different types of instabilities (shearing and clustering instability) are found to develop in the system. The development of these instabilities is shown to be in qualitative and quantitative agreement with the predicti...

Average energy and fluctuations of a granular gas in the threshold of the clustering instability Abstract The behavior of an isolated dilute granular gas near the threshold of its clustering instability is investigated by means of fluctuating hydrodynamics and the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. The theoretical predictions from the former are shown to be in good agreement with the simulat...
متن کاملTowards a continuum theory of clustering in a freely cool- ing inelastic gas
– We performed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the clustering instability of a freely cooling dilute gas of inelastically colliding disks in a quasi-one-dimensional setting. We observe that, as the gas cools, the shear stress becomes negligibly small, and the gas flows by inertia only. Finite-time singularities, intrinsic in such a flow, are arrested only when close-packed cluster...
متن کاملFalling jets of particles in viscous fluids
We have investigated the time evolution of a jet of non-Brownian particles falling under the action of gravity in a viscous liquid at low Reynolds number. Different regimes have been observed depending on volume fraction and particle-to-jet diameter ratio. In particular, the jet has been found to be unstable and to develop varicose modulation of its diameter at low volume fractions. The dominan...
متن کاملGranular Rayleigh-Taylor instability: experiments and simulations.
A granular instability driven by gravity is studied experimentally and numerically. The instability arises as grains fall in a closed Hele-Shaw cell where a layer of dense granular material is positioned above a layer of air. The initially flat front defined by the grains subsequently develops into a pattern of falling granular fingers separated by rising bubbles of air. A transient coarsening ...
